Waterloo: Introducing the 1969 Filmset & the Perils of the Cavalry Charge

With “Colditz” actor Richard Heffer, who played the part of Capt. Cavalié Mercer, G Troop RHA.

Recording the ‘living memories’ of former soldiers is all the rage. We can’t do that for the Napoleonic era, but you really need to listen to this. Richard and I have toured Mercer’s Waterloo campaign routes together and he kindly agreed to share a few recollections. Here he gives an intriguing introduction to life on set of the epic, and his description of the cavalry charge is a must for anyone who wants to feel the destructive power and danger for all involved.

SUPPORTING YOUTH ADVENTURE

Many of our journeys have a nautical link, from Nelson at Copenhagen, to the crucial logistics for Wellington’s Peninsular army, to surprise landings to keep Napoleon’s armies on their toes.

We are keen to inspire future generations with a taste for adventure.

So we actively support The Island Trust, a registered charity, helping youngsters, particularly those who might not otherwise have the opportunity, to develop life skills and self-confidence on beautiful traditionally rigged wooden sailing ships.

You can read more about their activities here: www.theislandtrust.org.uk
